Etymology

According to historians the word Tezpur has been derived from Sanskrit word Teza which means blood and Pura in the same context means town so together the literal meaning of the city is city of Blood. They say before an invasion of British the city was renowned as Sontipur which was however reamed as Tezpur by the British colonial administration.

Now coming back to tourist attraction than make sure to understand that the city has some of the most venerated temples and to name them we have Mahabhairab Temple, Ketakeshwar Dewal and Nag Sankar temple.

Mahabhairab Temple of Tezpur is amongst the most important temples of the state and it was commissioned by the rulers of Salasthamba dynasty during the call of 8thto 10th century. It is believed that the original temple was structured out of stone and till the call of dynasties rule many empires came here and restored the walls of the temple.


Ketakeshwar Dewal is another majestic temple of Hindus and it is believed to be sacred of all. Traveler must understand that this significant landmark is an important pilgrimage center of Hindus and the main orgy of the temple is Lord Shiva who is believed to be the sole power of universe.

Beside these historic temples you have presence of Nag Sankar temple which is solemnized to attribute the omnipresence of Lord Shiva. 

Apart from temples you have other scenic and natural points like Cole Park, Hazara Pukhuri, Padum Pukhuri, Bamuni hills which is renowned for its artistic design and the structural remnants you will witness here carries an essence of Gupta period and Agnigarh which is excavated by the adventure lovers to serve their trekking and picnic purpose.

Consider coming here during the months of October to May to witness the glorious roofs of Tezpur.

How to Reach

By air- the nearest airport to Tezpur is Saloni Airport which is located at a distance of around 10 km from here. The airport basically is a domestic one but receives flights from Jorhat, Guwahati and Kolkata.




By train- the nearest railway station to Tezpur is Rangapara North Railway station which is very well connected with all the major railway station of the state.
