» » Kolli Hills and its Amazing Environment



Located perfectly with the serenity of Namakkal District
of Tamil Nadu, Kolli Hills is amongst the most frequented destination of the state. Traveler must understand that affluence of Kolli hills is also renowned as Kolli Malai which in general means Mountains of Death.

Kolli hills measures the height of 1000 to 1300 meters and covers almost 280 square km of land. The mystique features of this hill are that it has almost 70 hairpin bends and to reach the top traveler would require covering every bends of it. 

History of Kolli Hills

According to early Hindu literature Kolli Pavai was a resident of ghost and many times the people had witnessed the same while walking atop of the hills therefore the name Mountains of Death was revered by the locals to relate the instance.


They say the ghost used to lure wayfarers and had killed many of them. Traveler must understand that Kolli Pavai is renowned as 'Ettukai Amman'. Ettukai Amman in general is a native deity of the Kolli Pavai Amman Temple. According to folklore the historic sages used to adore Kolli Pavai Amman to save them from the resurrection of demons.

It was during the call of 200 AD Valvil Ori used to control the entire region, who according to historians was a renowned philanthropist of ancient Tamil Nadu. They say he used only single arrow to kill boar, lion, bear and deer.  His leadership and potential was an inspiration for many and accounting his work various Tamil poets have mentioned his marksmanship in various edition of their work.

Traveler must understand that Kolli hills are famous for its rich collection of rare herbs which are said to be effective in terms of healing almost every kind of syndromes. Tamil literature like Purananuru, Ainkurnuru, Manimekalai and Silappadhikaram has mentioned the tale of Kolli Hills in their various literary works.

People and Culture 

The bends of Kolli hills is lived by tribal people who run their livelihood by eating rice and millets. Beside that these tribe people eats ripe jackfruit with wild honey which according to them adds taste and fragrance in their dish.


Evergreen vegetation which is covered by tea, coffee, pineapple, black pepper, jackfruit and many other plant spices adds more meadows to the beauty of this pristine and historic hill station.

Consider trekking to be sole adventures perks of Kolli Hills beside that traveler cal also look to try boating at Boat house which is fairly a new initiative taken by a government of Tamil Nadu to attract more traveler.

Major Attraction of the Hill Station

When it comes to its major attraction of Kolli hills than Kundur Nadu, Pulianjolai and Ariyur Solai reserve forests speaks it all for you. Traveler must understand that all these reserve forest are maintained and supervised by the government of the state. 


Other attractions of Kolli Hills are rapaleeswarar Temple, Siddhar Caves, Agaya Gangai Waterfalls, Botanical Garden, Masila Falls, Selur View Point and Seekuparai Viewpoint.
